Narrow can be a strategic advantage

Canadian digital products often operate across provincial rules, local supply, large geographies, professional oversight and regional expectations. Those conditions can make a generic global product less useful at the moment of decision. A focused platform can organize the relevant complexity into a legible path.

Narrowness alone is not a moat. A site becomes defensible when the scope enables deeper verification, better workflows, stronger local coverage and more useful commercial relationships than a broad competitor can justify.

02

Five conditions worth building around

We look for markets where demand already exists but the path from question to outcome is unnecessarily difficult. The strongest opportunities usually share several conditions.

  • A recurring, high-intent question with a clear reason to return or act.
  • Fragmented information or supply that can be structured responsibly.
  • A verification problem that rewards an accountable operator.
  • A useful next action that can be measured without manipulating the user.
  • A commercial model aligned with solving the user's problem rather than prolonging it.
03

Build the product layer search cannot provide

Search discovery is distribution, not the complete product. Durable platforms add proprietary structure: provider records with freshness states, reference-level valuation logic, category-specific intake, local eligibility pathways, calculators with explicit assumptions or data with traceable sources.

That product layer should make the website more useful even if rankings fluctuate. It also creates reasons for direct use, partner participation and repeat workflows—the forms of demand an operator can influence more directly.

If the product disappears when the landing pages disappear, the business is still a publishing project—not yet an operating platform.
04

Trust compounds more slowly than traffic

In healthcare, legal access, private lending, fertility and senior care, the cost of ambiguity is high. The platform must say what it is, what it is not, how records are sourced, when they were reviewed and how commercial relationships affect presentation.

Those constraints can feel slower than aggressive growth tactics. They are also an advantage. Clear evidence boundaries improve the user experience, reduce partner risk and make the property easier to diligence or acquire later.

05

Know when not to scale

A focused platform should not expand merely because adjacent keywords exist. Expansion is justified when the operator can maintain the data, preserve user clarity and support the downstream workflow. Thin geography pages, copied category templates and unverified listings increase apparent footprint while weakening the product.

The operating test is straightforward: does the next page, city or category make a real decision easier? If the answer is unclear, the better investment may be freshness, conversion quality or deeper utility inside the existing scope.
